Kiev/Kyiv – 2019

Kiev was the third city of the Soviet Union and replaced Kharkov/Kharkiv as the ‘proletarian’ capital of Ukraine. The buildings of Soviet Kiev are largely civic structures that express a cohesive social model and infrastructure: libraries, bus stations, institutes, universities, expo centres, markets and planned housing with communal spaces. The individual and bespoke nature of many of these buildings demonstrates an innovative and experimental response to a unique social and ideological context.
